Passive House Los Angeles (PHLA+)

Passive House LA+ (PHLA+), a recently completed home in Culver City, California, is one of the most advanced homes constructed in Los Angeles County. Achieving many firsts for a residence in the region, it is a Los Angeles certified Passive House, a Zero Net Energy home (ZNE), and among the first Passive Houses built in Southern California. PHLA+ is a project designed by PARAVANT Architects, and is strategically planned to showcase the back-end technologies and benefits of the Passive House International (PHI) building standard, including home health, extremely high efficient energy use, and sustainable building practices.

NEW BOOK | “Passive House Buildings - California’s Energy Future”

PHCA, in collaboration with Low Carbon Productions has release the first book documenting the Passive House building pioneers working in California. The book presents 32 Passive House buildings located across California, including the first three in the Los Angeles Area.  It documents how the Passive House Standard is being utilized to meet the carbon reduction and climate change goals. This book demonstrates how the Passive House Standard provides a reliable and well-documented path to construct and renovate buildings to meet our State’s Net Zero Energy targets. More than ever the Passive House Standard is the way to design, build, and retrofit our buildings in California.

PARAVANT Architects is excited to be featured in the book “Passive House Buildings - California’s Energy Future” with a new ground-up passive house building in Los Angeles/CulverCity.

PASSIVE HOUSE

PARAVANT ARCHITECTS located in Los Angeles are promoting the “German Passive House Technology” which has been used successfully in hundreds of buildings over the past 10 years in Europe. This established building technology enables to reduce the energy consumption by up to 90% while at the same time creating a comfortable building. Currently, only a hand full of “Passive Homes” has been developed in the United States. Other typologies as office buildings, mixed-use buildings, public buildings and schools can be build using this standard.

Passive buildings are using the following improved basic construction materials/methods:
  • More insulation
  • Better windows
  • High air tightness
  • Heat recovery from exhaust air
These small measures result in a drastic reduced demand for heating and cooling of the building. Passive buildings have a high thermal comfort, very good indoor air quality and are cost-efficient.
