Passive House Los Angeles (PHLA+)

Passive House LA+ (PHLA+), a recently completed home in Culver City, California, is one of the most advanced homes constructed in Los Angeles County. Achieving many firsts for a residence in the region, it is a Los Angeles certified Passive House, a Zero Net Energy home (ZNE), and among the first Passive Houses built in Southern California. PHLA+ is a project designed by PARAVANT Architects, and is strategically planned to showcase the back-end technologies and benefits of the Passive House International (PHI) building standard, including home health, extremely high efficient energy use, and sustainable building practices.

NEW BOOK | “Passive House Buildings - California’s Energy Future”

PHCA, in collaboration with Low Carbon Productions has release the first book documenting the Passive House building pioneers working in California. The book presents 32 Passive House buildings located across California, including the first three in the Los Angeles Area.  It documents how the Passive House Standard is being utilized to meet the carbon reduction and climate change goals. This book demonstrates how the Passive House Standard provides a reliable and well-documented path to construct and renovate buildings to meet our State’s Net Zero Energy targets. More than ever the Passive House Standard is the way to design, build, and retrofit our buildings in California.

PARAVANT Architects is excited to be featured in the book “Passive House Buildings - California’s Energy Future” with a new ground-up passive house building in Los Angeles/CulverCity.

First Passive House in Los Angeles


PARAVANT Architects has designed the first new construction Passive House in Los Angeles. The project has received the Pre-Construction Certification and is now under construction in Culver City, CA.

The term passive house (Passivhaus in German) refers to a rigorous, standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy building that require little energy for space heating or cooling.

RESIDENTIAL REMODEL | CULVER CITY, CA

Architect Culver CityPARAVANT Architects has completed the remodel of a single family residence in Culver City, CA.  The design makes maximum use of limited space, allowing for the addition of a new bathroom, and a contemporary open kitchen and laundry area.  The home is equipped with LED energy efficient light fixtures, energy star appliances, and solar tubes to bring daylight deeper into the house, reducing the need for artificial lights during the day.  A whole house fan is used as a sustainable alternative to more traditional air-condition systems.  All interior and exterior finishes were updated and replaced during the remodeling process including a new roof, windows, attic insulation, crawl space insulation, stucco repair, bamboo flooring, tile work, and a cozy window seat with energy efficient glazing in the large picture window overlooking the redesigned garden.

The Gelato Lounge is part of the famous reality TV show in Germany called „Goodbye Germany“. The TV show accompanies Germans who are leaving their home country to start a „new life“in various countries all over the world.
